Money Mondays- Financially Tight Marriage

I have received countless amounts of advice for handling money in my marriage. Some advice was for both of us and other pieces of advice were solely for me. Some has worked and others we haven't even tried yet. The best piece of advice I received was to stick to something and refine it along the way.
But money brings so much stress to families. When there is a change such as moving, new baby, new home or even job lost, many don't take the time to reanalyze the household finances. There are many stats that state how quickly a marriage can fall apart due to finances. Your marriage does not have to be doomed to failure because of money. I repeat- NOT doomed. Make sure you are aware of the following situations in your marriage:

Spending habits
Like many couples, Mr. Mind and I have different spending habits. I have trouble buying expensive items no matter how much we need them. I'm getting better as we figure out how much we need/want something, set a price expectation and search around. That way when we buy it, I know I got the best deal. Overspending can get so many couples in trouble. But with communication, you can buy a $200 purse as long as that money wasn't needed to pay the plummer.

Responsibility
Do you follow the rule that the man pays for everything? How about splitting it down the middle? Do you subscribe to the thought that your bills are yours and mine are mine? Doesn't matter as long as each person knows the plan and can actually afford it!

Cost
Bills, Bills and more Bills. Don't ignore it. Face it! How much does it cost to run your household? Total it up and make sure your partner knows the number. Then figure out if your income or joint income can afford the cost. You might be surprise at the answer.

Blame Game
Sometime in a marriage, we all play the blame game. "You did this and you didn't do that!" Blaming doesn't solve the problem but a clear cut plan does. If you or your partner are responsible for increasing debt, don't blame them, create a plan to end it. Create a plan to prevent it from happening again. If someone has a shopping problem, get them help. There is REAL help you know!

I hope these topics will help your marriage become Financially Tight!

Until next Monday,
From Maruki
